What is considered an emergency dental procedure?
A dental emergency can be generally defined as any event that affects your oral health in a way that is not manageable with routine care. There are many different types of emergencies and most people never experience one, but it’s good to know there are dental services available that can assist.
List of Common Dental Emergencies
Toothache
If you have a toothache, the best thing to do is call our help line. The possible reasons for this are many; severe cavities, dental infections and so on. Toothaches may be caused by trauma to the teeth or face as well. If such an event occurs, please contact us at once.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is created by an infection inside of the tooth, on the bone or in the gums. In most cases if not treated soon enough it will spread to other areas of your jaw and head or neck, causing more serious problems.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
If you need to extract a wisdom tooth or are experiencing sensitive teeth, we can offer emergency services.
After hours dental care is available with crowns and root canal treatments.
Broken Filling
In cases where tooth decay has impacted the natural material, fillings can get worn out over time. It typically happens as a result of consuming food or drink, teeth grinding or clenching or an event that causes injury to the tissues and filling falls off unexpectedly during eating. Bright Smiles provides emergency dental care for such urgent needs.
Chipped Tooth
It can be caused by an accidental fall or while eating something hard. If only a small piece of the tooth is chipped off, the dentist might suggest a filling. If that damage is extensive, especially if it is a front tooth, then the dentist might suggest bonding, wherein a tooth-coloured composite resin is used.
Broken Denture
A broken denture is when one side of a removable appliance has come loose or pops out. They often happen if you bite into a hard piece of food, drop it on the floor, step on it by accident, or because they are old and brittle. The dentist will have to fix this problem so that your denture fits securely in your mouth
Painful Ulcers
While painful mouth sores or ulcers can heal by themselves if not tended to, there are some over the counter treatments available that will speed up the healing process. However, if it takes more than two weeks for an ulcer to heal, this could be a sign of underlying problems and medical attention should be sought immediately.
Broken Teeth or Knocked-out Tooth
These other common dental issues are some emergency procedures that our team can help you with. In case of a broken tooth, rinse your mouth gently to remove any food between the teeth and wait for assistance to arrive. To relieve pain and reduce swelling, apply a cold compress on the outside of the mouth or lips. If the tooth is knocked out, rinse it with water and put it back in its socket or place it in a small milk container.
While Bright Smiles Dentistry is not a 24 hour emergency dental service, though we can usually assist all emergency dental appointments within 24 hours to ensure you get the care needed as soon as possible.
